What is the Flo by Moen?

Who is it for?

The Moen Flo is for those who want more control over their plumbing system – including more protection against water damage. It is not for you if you want less engagement with your plumbing system. If you are comfortable with a somewhat higher level of involvement, it is the most powerful tool on the market for homeowners who want to quickly self-diagnose and stop water leaks on their own piping system.

What does it do?

The Moen Flo is a WiFi-connected shut off valve installed on the house’s main water line that has the ability to constantly “learn” your water usage; test for tiny leaks and alert you about them; and automatically shut the water off if it detects a catastrophic leak.

What does it NOT do?

  • Despite its intelligent learning abilities, it’s impossible to distinguish between a leak and intentional usage with 100% accuracy. Because of this, you will get “false-alarms” if you use a bunch of water outside your normal usage patterns (super long shower, etc). When this happens, you can turn it back on quickly through the app.
  • Although it will typically catch a catastrophic leak very quickly, it cannot prevent all water damage.
  • You will be alerted to even very small leaks through the app when it performs its nightly leak check, but it will require further diagnosis to find out what is causing the alert and fix it to stop any water damage that may be starting to occur.

What about the optional sensors?

The sensors are WiFi-connected wireless leak detectors. They can be used as stand-alone leak detectors that make an audible alarm when they detect moisture and alert you on your phone. Or, if you have the Moen Flo, they will also be able to shut the water off to the home if a leak is detected. You want these in places where there is a high likelihood of leaks – under kitchen sink/dishwasher, water heater pan, etc… This way, even small leaks can be caught right away and further reduce the time they have to cause damage before you are alerted.

What about the optional battery backup?

The battery backup makes sure you will still be protected for some time by the Flo if the power goes out to the house. If your device loses WiFi connectivity, it will still be able to function and shut the water off to the house as long as it has power.

What about powering the device?

The Flo needs an electrical outlet to power it. Depending on the layout and what your preferences are, you may either hire an electrician to install a new outlet or we may be able to route the Moen extension cables to connect to an existing outlet.

What Does Legacy NOT do?

The Flo by Moen needs a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal at the point of installation. This is the customer’s responsibility. Legacy is responsible for installing the device properly, and we warranty our work for leaks. Setting up the device/app, using the device/app, and troubleshooting the device itself is between the customer and Moen directly. Any on-going Legacy support for the device and its use is not included in the cost of installation.
