Ask a Master Plumber
Here you will find great tips to help you with your household plumbing and water heater maintenance from the numerous questions we answer each week.
Q: Why is my Pilot light on but no hot water?
A: There is most likely a problem with your gas control valve or thermostat. When either isn’t working, then the gas flow isn’t being turned on and water won’t be heated. The only way to correct this problem is to replace your thermostat or gas control valve. If the pilot light doesn’t stay lit after replacement, then you need to replace the thermocouple.
Q: How do I un-jam my garbage disposal?
A: You want to be very careful when dealing with your garbage disposal, as you can do serious damage to your disposal motor or even your home electrical system. If you notice a jam, you can insert an Allen wrench into the bottom of the disposer and attempt to free up the jam. If this isn’t effective, contact a plumber. It’s better to err on the side of caution than exacerbate the problem.
Q: The water doesn’t drain out of our dishwasher. Any suggestions before I call for repair?
A: This may be a simple fix that doesn’t require a plumber. Three common causes for standing water are a dirty hose loop, which is used to vent the appliance, a dirty air gap, or a plugged strainer basket. All of these problems are caused by a build-up of dirt and are easily remedied. Just clean the grease and food buildup from the offending area, and water should stop collecting in your dishwasher.
